What was lost, is found......
Rare and endangered horses are given a chance at survival with a preserve, just for them.
Windcross Conservancy is a South Dakota registered non-profit corporation. We are 501c3 applied and it is with confidence that we hope to have our determination in hand very shortly. More importantly, the Windcross Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation of America’s Heritage Horse. These horses are of strong Iberian or Spanish descent. Their genetics are of the rarest and most pure genetics available in America today among it’s historical horse populations.
A Preserve is born
This year we have obtained the donated use of land from a dedicated South Dakota pioneer family. This family has donated the use of acreage for the preservation horses. Without this we would have already lost four of these rare horses to the sale barns and killer buyers. We are forever grateful to their support for these magnificent horses.
America’s Heritage Horse
The rarest of the American Iberian population, these horses can trace their roots back 100 years plus. Native American tradition, historical records and letters of old mustangers has helped the Windcross begin to piece together the history of these horses.
Some hail from deep into what is now Oklahoma, but was once the home of the traditional Osage people and their horses. Others come from deep in old Mexico, from time of estancias, missions and pueblos. Diaries of conquistadors, letters of soldiers to home. Legends and maps of the Old West are all used. With the addition of modern scientific genetic research we are just beginning to see path of these horses through history to today.
Join us in preserving the horse that built the American West.
Mesteneo.
